WILDWOOD — Many people have a hard time getting motivated to get much accomplished on a weekend morning.
Not Emma Vendt.
The Marquette senior scored the only goal in the Mustangs’ 8 a.m. Lafayette Tournament semifinal game against Westminster and then tallied two more as well as a 1 v 1 goal beyond regulation to lead Marquette to a 3-2 win over Summit in the 11 a.m. tourney championship.
“It’s been a good morning,” Vendt said. “I got my first one in and then I was like, ‘All right, I want more. I’m hungry. Give me more goals.’ ”
Vendt was the Mustangs’ leading scorer each of the last two seasons with a combined 35 goals and 81 points, including 24 goals and 58 points last fall.
She has picked that pace right back up to start this season with four goals and 11 points in the first four games.

“She’s got just raw talent that you can’t teach,” Marquette coach Nina Walters said. “Sometimes I don’t know how she does what she does, but she does it and she finds the back of the net. She’s a captain this year, a great leader for the kids around her.”
Mustangs get some payback
Saturday marked the second successive season Marquette and Summit met in the Lafayette championship.
The Falcons prevailed in last year’s title tilt, so the win this time around provided a little payback for the Mustangs (3-1).
“Two years ago, we won in 1 v 1s against Kirkwood and last year we lost in 1 v 1s against Summit. It’s becoming a thing,” Walters said. “It’s always a good rivalry with the Rockwood schools. Between us and Lafayette (and Summit), the three of us are always very strong public schools and it’s more fun to battle each other. It’s a good atmosphere, a good, friendly competition.”
Falcons start season strong
Despite its first setback of the season, it has been a strong start to the campaign for Summit.
The Falcons, who beat the host Lancers 2-1 in Saturday morning’s semifinal, have a 5-1-1 record that includes a Gateway Classic pool championship.
This is after winning just seven games all of last season.
“It sets a good attitude for the season,” Summit coach Andy Neil said. "I’ll give a shout out to my girls. My captains were commenting to how everybody stayed positive and not dwelling on mistakes. The girls really held it together.”
Vendt gets it going
After tallying the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Westminster in the semifinal, Vendt didn’t have many touches, if any, early in the final.
But a pass from Phoebe Yoder led Vendt on a partial break-in. After a Summit defender closed on her, she went to the backhand and knocked it in to tie the game 1-1 with 3 minutes and 39 seconds left in the first quarter.
“It is not frustrating but just gets me pumped up and I couldn’t wait to get the ball and go and attack,” Vendt said. “I trust my team that they’re going to get it to me eventually and we got it.”
Vendt then tipped in a backhand shot by Sydney Rosen just over seven minutes into the second quarter to give Marquette a one-goal lead.
“I just touched it out and I saw that no one was on my back, so I was just gonna hit a reverse, hope it gets on cage and it went there,” Rosen said.

Summit scores early, late
The Falcons’ tallies came just over three minutes into the game and with just over three minutes left in the game.
Tracy Vu got the scoring started with the game’s first goal and Franky Neil scored on a penalty stroke with 3:36 left to tie it 2-2 and eventually send the game to 1 v 1.
“Going into it today, I knew we were playing a couple of tough teams, so part of me is happy we played competitive and got the win over Lafayette,” said Andy Neil, Franky’s father. “And then with Marquette, it was kind of a character game. The girls didn’t roll over when Marquette got the lead and kept fighting.”
Holt stands tall at the end
Marquette goalie Fofie Holt registered six saves in regulation and then made an even bigger mark in the 1 v 1 portion of the game in which each team chooses five shooters to go in on the goalie, much like a National Hockey League shootout, in a best-of-five format.
Vendt and Summit’s Anna Schnieders started the extra session by trading goals before Falcons goalie Kyra Shorb and Holt traded saves in the second round.
Rosen scored to put the Mustangs up by one and Holt produced another save. Sydney Rubenstein started the fourth round with a goal for Marquette, and Holt then sealed the win and the championship with a kick save.
“I’d only done them one time, so I didn’t really know what to do,” Holt said of the 1 v 1. “I just kind of predicted where it was gonna go.”
Rosen is one to watch
Rosen picked up the assist on the second Marquette goal and tallied what turned out to be the game-winner in the 1 v 1.
The freshman has scored a pair of goals and added an assist thus far in a strong start to her rookie campaign as a potential second offensive weapon with Vendt.
“I started playing field hockey two years ago and ever since I started, I just love the game so much I want to play as much as I possibly can and play at the highest level possible,” Rosen said.
The level Rosen plays at is more than likely just going to keep getting higher.
“She already fits in as a freshman. I’m glad I’ve got four years of her. She’s just gonna keep getting better,” Walters said. “She is very composed. Her vision is unreal. When she’s got the ball, she’s looking up the whole time. She knows the ball is there and you can’t teach that.”
