The building of a longtime grocery store on the Hill was recently sold to the owner of another local Italian grocer.
John DiGregorio, owner of DiGregorio's Italian Market on the Hill, recently purchased the former John Viviano & Sons store at 5139 Shaw Avenue. The grocer permanently closed last week after serving the region for 75 years.Â
Ashley Bowersox, a broker with Brentwood-based Hilliker Corporation, helped facilitate the deal. Bowersox said he immediately reached out to DiGregorio after learning of Viviano & Sons Grocery’s impending closure last month.Â
DiGregorio's Italian Market, located at 5200 Daggett Avenue, opened in 1971. It sells Italian wines, cheese, meats, olives and more.

“He knew it was time to protect the Hill and make sure the Hill stays the Hill,†Bowersox said. “If you lose a landmark such as that, hopefully it will be backfilled by a good project.â€
He is unsure what DiGregorio’s plans for the building are.
Bowersox said DiGregorio and John Viviano & Sons owner John Viviano III have known each other since the third grade, so the sale process was seamless and moved quickly. The space officially traded hands April 30.
“Everyone wanted what’s best for the Hill,†Bowersox said.
DiGregorio did not return requests for comment.
