Kasparas Jakucionis made a tiebreaking layup with 32 seconds left, and No. 22 Illinois survived a furious comeback bid by Washington to squeak out an 81-77 victory Sunday at Alaska Airlines arena. The Fighting Illini (11-3, 3-1 Big Ten), playing at UW for the first time since the 1952 Final Four, had a 17-point lead but the Huskies tied it at 75 on Luis Kortright’s layup with 47 seconds left. Jakucionis then scored and the Illini put it away at the free throw line. Jakucionis had 18 points and six assists, while Tre White pitched in 17 points and Kylan Boswell had 14.

Former Purdue football coach Ryan Walters has been hired as defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies. Coach Jedd Fisch announced the move on Friday. Walters compiled a 5-19 record in two seasons with the Boilermakers and was fired at the conclusion of the season. He built a reputation as a defensive mind at Illinois, leading the Fighting Illini to the No. 1 ranking in scoring defense and total defense in 2022.

Tre White had 20 points and 11 rebounds as No. 22 Illinois made a resounding statement on the road with a 109-77 blowout of ninth-ranked Oregon. Ben Humrichous shot 4 of 7 from 3-point range and scored 18 points on a night when Illinois went 16 for 29 behind the arc. Kylan Boswell also made four 3s and finished with 15 points for the Fighting Illini. Kasparas Jakucionis added 16 points, six rebounds and six assists. Jake Davis scored 12. Supreme Cook scored 20 to lead the Ducks, while Nate Bittle added 13 points and five rebounds.

Josh McCray scored his second touchdown of the game on a 9-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to give No. 21 Illinois the lead, and the Illini held on to beat No. 14 South Carolina 21-17 in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. McCray rushed for 114 yards on 13 carries, including a 3-yard TD run in the third quarter. Luke Altmeyer threw for 174 yards with a touchdown and an interception as Illinois (10-3) closed out the fifth 10-win season in program history and its first since 2001. South Carolina fell short of the fifth 10-win season in program.

The holidays are over and so are the bulk of college basketball’s nonconference games. As the year turns to 2025, things are going to ramp up in a hurry. Coming off a quiet stretch in the schedule, the season kicks into full gear this week, highlighted by a super Saturday with four games between ranked teams that includes No. 1 Tennessee hosting No. 23 Arkansas. Fellow undefeated teams No. 6 Florida and No. 12 Oklahoma also face tough games. The Gators return to action with a game at No. 10 Kentucky, and the Sooners play at No. 5 Alabama.

Both No. 14 South Carolina and No. 21 Illinois are on the verge of rare feats for their program as they prepare to meet at the Citrus Bowl to cap their season. Both programs faced crossroads and overcame adversity to get there and put themselves on the verge of 10-win seasons. South Carolina rallied to win the team's final six games to clinch a trip to Florida for bowl season. Illinois also had to rally and win their final three to put themselves on the verge of a 10-win season.

Kylan Boswell had 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists and Tomislav Ivisic scored 23 points to lead No. 24 Illinois to a 117-64 victory over winless Chicago State. Boswell was one assist shy of his first triple-double and got it with a pass that set up Keaton Kutcher’s 3-pointer with 1:47 left. It was the seventh triple-double in program history. Gabe Spinelli, son of Chicago State coach Scott Spinelli, led the Cougars with 20 points.
