College, major:Â Truman State University, education
Goal:Â "I hope to get my master's in education and teach in underprivileged areas. It has always amazed me how one act of inspiration can start a ripple effect among people. I hope to one day accomplish the good deed that starts the wave."
Favorite Subject:Â "Physical education is my favorite school subject because I love playing sports and being active. I like to learn about strength training and how to improve my health. Physical education classes are always interesting and I don't have to sit in a desk. They allow me to get rid of some of my energy and have fun."
Favorite book:Â The Storyteller (Jodi Picoult)Â
Favorite musician:Â Imagine Dragons or Olly Murs
Role model: "There are many people who have influenced my life from my coaches to my teachers. However, my parents have always been my biggest fans. They have supported me through everything and encouraged me in all that I do. For them and their support I am ever grateful."
Personal story: "During the second game of my basketball season senior year, I took a bad step and tore my anterior cruciate ligament as well as partially tearing to my medial cruciate ligament. When I went to the doctor the first question that I asked was "Can I still play?" When he told me it was possibility, I knew I would have to try. Many people told me I was crazy, that it would be too hard, too painful, or that I would potentially incur more damage.
"From the school trainer to my classmates, I had people telling me not to do it. But in my heart, I knew I had to at least try. After a month on the bench, a healed MCL, and a supportive brace, I finished out my basketball career. In the beginning, most people had already discredited me, not believing that I would be able to play, but by my last game, almost everyone was a believer. Just because something isn't the norm doesn't mean it can't be done. My injury taught to me to follow my heart and never doubt my own strength."
